1. What is the writer trying to find out more about through their research (what research question guides their work)?
The writer is trying to find out how professional editors really improve the writings they edit.
2. What is the research methodology of this article (how do they collect their information, and how do they analyze the information they collect)?
The research methodology was a case study that was done in an office. they collect there data by verbalizing all their ideas together, before they even begin to talk about it. the info is analyzed by video taping and recording. they also will take the original writing and compare it to the improved one.
3. How does professional editing differ from how students revise their own work?
In professional editing, the editor just corrects the grammatical flaws and does not get into changing the writing style of the piece. Students revise because they need to get rid of weak points in their argument.

Group 1 : Write a Personal E-mail as Natalie to her parents.
Mom & Dad,
i have come to realized that the idea of virginity is just a tool that is used to keep women in place. i bleieve i have the right to seel it because it s mine. some peole find it very valuable, and they are obviously willing to pay. besdies, it was okay for my sister to prostitute for three weeks. it should be okay for me to sell my virgintiy for over $6.7 million. this is my idea and my choice.

1. What does Bitzer not mean by “rhetorical situation”? In other words, how does his view differ from past views that readers might compare to his?
Blitzer believes that the characteristics of Rhetorical Situation are different then other writing styles. He involves people, audiences, speakers, conflicts into his writng, not "situations", like typical writers. Blitzer believes persuasions, arguments, debates should be the basis of ideas. He would rather get people activly involved, ratyher then makeing the particiapte like a typical writer.
1. Explain what “exigence” is. Give your own example of an exigence someone could respond to in writing.
Exigence is a demand. The fishing expedition that Blitzer describes is an exigenc. IT is demanded that fish be successfully caught. If he didnt catch any fish, then all the work put into getting ready to go fishing would be a waste. My example of an Exigence is when my dad tries to fix things on his own. He is to stubborn to take it to a shop or to call a repair man because they take to long and cost alot of money, so he thereofre convinces himself he can fix it. the exigence is my dad want to fix things himself because they get done on time and we pay less money to fix it.

2. What does Bitzer mean by “rhetorical situation”?
Blitzer describes Rhetorical situation as how things should be described. He wants to know anything and everything about the situattion. Therefore, I think he means that "Rhetorical Situation" is the background information of the idea. The backgroudn information probvides the materials nessicary to help make a persuasive argument.

One argument that is being made in the introduction of the English Studies Book, is the argument of “What is English Studies and is it in Crisis?” Bruce McComiskey thought of this question after his argument during the Raft competition, he realized he needed to learn more about his field, about English Studies. He stated that the view of English studies was discipline and confusing. Later, PEter Elbow said he didn't know what English Studies was, but he was sure it was something good. McComiskey agrees thats the subject of English has become very confusing. Due to the confusion over the subject, Ian Small and Josephine Guy believed that there was always a chance for crisis with English. McComiskey beleives that English studies are not in crisis and that the problems are fixable.

What does Bartholomae mean when he says that students must “invent the university” when they write in college?
That the students must write with passion and be able to speak the language in which they are writing. When students are trying to prove a point they need to gather information of a subject, create the claim, can find more information in order to back up their claim.
What does Bartholomae suggest is a way for students to become “insiders” within academic discourse?
To become “insiders” the students have to invented or discovered an original idea. This must be done so the students know the necessary steps in explaining discourse, because students need to be engaged in the discourse and learn to extend themselves into the commonplaces, set phrases, rituals, gestures, habits of mind, tricks of persuasion, and obligatory conclusions within their academic community.
Summarize some of the differences between the two examples of student writing that Bartholomae examines, and Bartholomae’s opinion of these examples.
The first article was pretty average and it was too simple compared to the other. The essay was lacking in creativity. The other essay gave a much more thorough answer on the topic. It was very complex and much longer than the first. the seconded essay was also very opinionated and had a strong vocabulary presented throughout the paper.
Bartholomae thought of the first essay as well planned out but it lack originality and was far to controlled. Bartholomae thought of the second essay was excellent and highly qualified.

Claim: We need to help stop the murder of people in Darfur
Data: A Genocide is occurring in Darfur
Warrent: Genocide is murder
Backing: Murder is illegal and it is the intentional killing of another person
Grounds: Innocent adults and children are being killed and enslaved everday
Qualifiers: We should help Darfur keep its children safe. We should provide medical attention and means of defense to the people of Darfur.
Rebuttal: Unless helping Darfur will cause our country to be in a second war. Unless the people of Darfur refuse our help.

What claim is being made?
This Editorial Cartoon by Walt Handelsm is referring to the fight to save Darfur. The cliam being made by Walt Handelsman is that the genocide in Darufr needs to be stopped.
What type of claim is this?
This is a claim of policy. It should that we should be concerned about the genocide in Darfur and we eed to help these people.
What types of appeals or evidence are used to support the claim?
This claim uses a pathos appeal because its using the severed arm to draw an emotion about the genocide that is occurring in Darufr. It is trying to make you feel the need to help the people of Darufr by making feel sad or angry about what is happen in Darfur. it hows the brutality of what is happening in Darufr.
